The road travelled in deploying BPM practices across the organization does not always lead to success. If this is the case then the hype created around the practice called BPM should be untrue. If BPM is hype then why is it that the companies who have deployed BPM in their organization enjoy increase in productivity and decrease in operational costs? BPM has never been the culprit nor is the hype created around BPM’s effectiveness false. The problem has been in the way BPM was deployed in the organizations. Let us go through some of the reasons which would have led to the unsuccessful deployment of BPM practices: Some organizations rely on intuitions to map their requirements and implement BPM practice. A BPM suite can always be customized based on the requirements of an organization. The requirements need to be researched well using statistical tools or by hiring a BPM expert before customizing a BPM suite. Not doing so would lead to errors in the ongoing business process with or without deployment of BPM practices. Once BPM has been implemented, companies tend to measure the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) which has been built in the BPM suite. Certain actions depending on the KPI’s have to be taken to ensure the business processes are optimized. Ignoring the KPI’s would not enhance the effectiveness of your BPM practices. Selecting a right BPM suite is very important for you as a customer. You would not want to be in a situation where you are in the last stages of deploying BPM and it does not meet some of your expectations. BPM suites are expensive and the time taken to roll out a BPM project varies. When analyzing BPM suites present in the market ensure that you are aware of the shortfalls of the BPM suites before you make the purchasing decision. Rolling out BPM projects would take anywhere between a few months or a year depending on organizations need. Business processes are affected if the market conditions are volatile. This would mean there will be a need to modify the BPM suite so as to meet the market changes. The inability to change the business processes within a BPM suite would lead to outcomes not in line with the set business goals. Hence, it becomes essential for the stakeholders to monitor, modify and measure outcome of the business processes frequently.
The precautions listed above are just a handful of them that you can take to avoid pitfalls while deploying BPM. As the technology advances and the demand to optimize business process increases the list of precautions needed to deploy BPM will also increase.
