History

Singapore Airlines – Singapore uses SAP R/3 as their business application spread across 5 departments some of them as different subsidiaries of Singapore Airlines. All departments worked on a central database in R/3 specifically pertaining to the needs of that particular department which was connected by a WAN. For example; the purchase department works on the finance modules of the SAP R/3 and the Logistics department works on the infrastructure and constructions modules, we can see that each department’s data is confined within each. Singapore Airlines outsourced the work that needed to be done to different organizations where information was scattered and system did not perform that way it is was expected

Problem

Singapore Airlines needed a central repository that would offload the data from the SAP R/3 databases for the SAP system to perform optimally. The data generated at Singapore Airlines was over 1.3 TB of data and maintaining this was critical for the organization. The documents that were generated were of various types including invoices, drawings, business documents and so on, which were to be accessed frequently by the users. Singapore Airlines also had SAP business workflow implemented across departments, due to the large size of the database; the SAP System could not perform to its optimal levels.
